Foundational training

Privacy Strategy and Governance

Provides a high-level overview of privacy at the UW, including:

  • Insights about the influence of the UW’s values on our privacy strategy, accountability framework, policy, and principles.
  • Roles and responsibilities of the UW Privacy Office, Privacy Partners, business process and system owners, and University Personnel.

Who should attend

  • Privacy Partners.
  • Individuals who work with personal data and/or systems that process personal data.
  • Other interested University personnel.

Privacy Partner Roadmap

An implementation roadmap that guides Privacy Partners through what’s needed to manage privacy within their unit. This training helps prepare Privacy Partners to identify and manage privacy risks for UW while also protecting individuals’ privacy. It’s the foundation for Privacy Partners to make privacy-relevant decisions for their unit.

Privacy Partners are supported by a combination of synchronous training support sessions, office hours, and self-guided educational resources available throughout our website.

These office hours are reserved for Privacy Partners to bring questions they have about the Privacy Partner Roadmap, TrustArc, and privacy-related issues arising in their unit.

Privacy Practices and Responsibility

Teaches University personnel how to proactively include privacy in the design of their project, service, or system, and how to react when things don’t go as planned. Includes information about:

  • Proactive Privacy by Design concepts that are based on research and adapted to align with UW Privacy Principles.
  • Reactive data subject request and incident management policies and practices at UW.
  • On-demand training for specific privacy practices and requirements.
  • Support services available through Privacy Partners or the Privacy Office.

  • System or Service Owners.
  • UW Personnel who work with personal data.

TrustArc Privacy Management Platform training

TrustArc 101: Data Inventory

Provides an overview of the value a data inventory will provide the University community and how TrustArc can help you with your responsibility for managing personal data.

  • Business process owner or the business process owner’s designee.
  • System owner or the system owner’s designee.
  • Third party contact or third party contact’s designee.

Data Inventory Support

Not sure where to start or feeling stuck with your data inventory? Seeking clarification about how to inventory certain types of systems or business processes? Interested in learning from questions and scenarios posed by colleagues? Bring your data inventory questions and scenarios and receive support from Privacy Office staff.

  • Individuals responsible for completing their unit’s data inventory.

TrustArc 102: Privacy Assessments

Provides an overview of data elements and activities that are considered high-risk at the UW and why a privacy assessment needs to be completed when you are designing your business process or system and before you collect data. Also provides an overview of TrustArc assessments and how they can help you manage your risk.

  • Privacy assessment owner or privacy assessment owner’s designee.

Privacy Portfolio in the TrustArc Privacy Management Platform

Designed specifically for UW’s Privacy Partners, this training and support session will demonstrate how the Privacy Partners can support their UW units in managing their privacy portfolio in TrustArc.

Data collection, use, and maintenance

Demographic Data Info Session

Introduces new requirements and resources for appropriate use of demographic data for University Personnel. These requirements and resources are aimed at supporting privacy, data governance, and DEI at the UW.

UW Personnel who work with job applicant or UW personnel data.

Academic Data Analytics Info Session

Introduces a shared vision to use student data—such as interactions on the Canvas learning management system—to improve retention while respecting student privacy and managing risk to the University. This effort includes an appropriate use guide for academic analytics, UW-IT created tools that gather analytics, and online resources for students to provide greater transparency as to when and where their data is collected and for what purpose.
